Every bar is abrasive powder suspended in a binder — usually wax or grease. The color comes from the abrasive itself, and manufacturers have used the same rough color convention for decades. Two things vary from bar to bar:
- Grit size. Coarser abrasive removes more material faster but leaves a duller surface behind. Finer abrasive removes almost nothing and exists purely to build shine.
- Abrasive hardness. A bar has to be harder than the metal to cut it, but not so hard it gouges. This is why a compound that works beautifully on brass does very little on stainless steel.
Buffing is almost always a staged job. You cut first with a coarser bar to remove oxidation, tarnish, and fine scratches, then you color with a finer bar to bring up the gloss. Skipping the cutting stage means polishing scratches to a shine. Skipping the coloring stage leaves a surface that looks hazy and grey.

What Is the Right Compound Order for Stainless Steel?
Stainless is the metal people most often get wrong, because it is far harder than brass or aluminum and a soft-metal bar simply slides across it. Work through three bars in order:
- Black Emery first. At roughly 400 grit this is your heavy cut — it takes out rust, corrosion, pitting, and deep scratches, and it de-burrs edges. Run it on a sisal or spiral sewn wheel.
- Gray SCR next. SCR is unusual because it both cuts and colors. It clears what the emery left behind while already starting to bring up luster, which on lightly marked stainless can be all you need. Run it on a spiral sewn or cushion sewn wheel.
- White Rouge last. White Rouge is the finishing bar on every metal, stainless included. Use it on a cushion sewn, loose sewn, or flannel wheel for the final reflective pass.
On stainless that is merely dull rather than damaged, you can often start at Gray SCR and skip the emery entirely.
When Should I Use Greaseless Compound Instead?
Greaseless compound is the odd one out, and it trips people up. It is not a polish at all — it is abrasive grit in a water-soluble glue that dries onto the wheel and behaves like a flexible sanding surface. Instead of building gloss, it lays down a uniform brushed or satin texture.
Reach for greaseless compound when you want the soft directional sheen you see on appliance panels, restaurant equipment, and architectural stainless. It comes in multiple grits, so it also works as a surface-prep stage on badly marked work.
Why the Right Compound Matters
Using a coloring bar to do a cutting job is the single most common reason a project stalls. Red rouge on tarnished aluminum will run for twenty minutes and change almost nothing, because the abrasive is far too fine to remove oxidation. Going the other way is worse: emery on a nearly finished stainless panel drags heavy scratches across work that was almost done.
The other cost is time. Matching the bar to the metal on the first pass routinely cuts a job in half, because you are not re-doing a stage you got wrong.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using one wheel for every compound. Coarse residue embedded in a finishing wheel will scratch your final pass. Dedicate one wheel per compound and label them.
- Reaching for a soft-metal bar on stainless. Tripoli is built for brass and aluminum. On stainless it does very little — start with Black Emery instead.
- Loading too much compound. A few seconds against the spinning wheel is plenty. Excess bar builds up, glazes over, and stops cutting.
- Skipping the wipe-down between stages. Leftover cutting compound on the workpiece transfers straight onto your clean wheel.
- Expecting greaseless to shine. It will not. Greaseless creates texture; you need a rouge afterward if a mirror is the goal.
